Indian music is one of the world’s oldest living musical traditions, with its sacred origins in the Sāmaveda, composed during the Vedic period (c. 1500–1200 BCE). The Vedic ṛṣis believed that Nāda (divine sound) was the first expression of creation, and the hymns of the Sāmaveda were sung rather than spoken, giving birth to Sāmagāna, the earliest form of structured Indian music.
Music in ancient Bharat was never merely entertainment—it was a sacred path to devotion, meditation and spiritual awakening. During Vedic yajñas, every note and chant was carefully rendered to harmonize the human mind with the cosmic order.
This tradition later evolved through Bharata Muni’s Nāṭya Śāstra (c. 200 BCE–200 CE), which established the foundations of ragas, talas and swaras. Over the centuries, Indian music blossomed into the rich Carnatic and Hindustani traditions while preserving its spiritual essence.
Even today, every raga is regarded as a prayer, every melody as an offering, and every performance as a celebration of the eternal wisdom of Sanathana Dharma.
